The drawing is presented in a vintage gilt-toned frame with a striking blue mat that highlights the soft tonal qualities of the original work. A handwritten identification note preserved on the reverse attributes the piece to H.E. Bernard (born 1834) and identifies the subject as a Breton fisherwoman.
The simplicity of the composition, combined with the artist’s sensitive draftsmanship, gives the piece a timeless quality that feels equally at home in French country, traditional European, cottage, or collected interiors.
This work was acquired from a Newport Beach, California estate that contained a thoughtfully assembled collection of antique European paintings, drawings, and decorative arts. Several works from the collection were reviewed by Bonhams, who described them as historically interesting and noted that works of this nature are handled by their Old Master Drawings department. Bonhams ultimately declined consignment, explaining that the anticipated individual values did not justify the cost of shipping the works to their specialists, and recommended pursuing evaluation through a regional auction house. No formal authentication or attribution accompanies this work.
